Dry Contact Relay Kit Installation & Pinout Reference

This page covers everything needed to install Zira's Dry Contact Relay Kit and wire it into your equipment. The kit ships as a four-component system: a PoE gateway, a 2-channel UDP/LAN dry contact relay, a PoE-to-USB-C converter, and the Zira camera. The gateway delivers PoE to the camera path and provides the LAN segment for the relay. Your controls team wires the load side off the relay; Zira handles the trigger logic.

1Receive your kit

Kit Contents

The kit ships as four components plus accessories. Verify all items against the list below before starting installation. The gateway powers the entire system over PoE; no separate 24V supply is required for the camera path.

PoE Gateway

Eight-port gigabit router with PoE-out on seven ports and a 10G SFP+ cage. Acts as the kit's power source, LAN segment, and uplink to the Zira platform. The camera path is powered via PoE; the relay sits on a standard LAN port.

2-Channel Dry Contact Relay

Two independent SPDT dry contact outputs controlled over UDP/IP. Provides COM, NO, and NC terminals per channel for flexible wiring into existing PLC inputs, alarms, or interlocks. Sits on the gateway LAN; Zira sends triggers as UDP packets.

Cable runs at a glance

Patch gateway port 1 into the customer's switch or wall internet outlet — this is the WAN uplink for the kit. Then run CAT5e/CAT6 from gateway port 3 to the relay's RJ45 jack (data only, no PoE required), and a second CAT5e/CAT6 from gateway port 8 (PoE) to the PoE-to-USB-C converter. Finish with a USB-C cable from the converter to the camera. Keep the camera leg under 3m for reliable USB-C operation.

2Network & firewall

WAN Uplink & Firewall Whitelist

The gateway needs outbound internet access through the customer's network. Patch gateway port 1 into the customer's switch or wall internet outlet, then have IT whitelist the domains below so Zira services, live video streaming, and camera time-sync can reach their endpoints.

Hand this list to IT before install day

If the firewall blocks any of the above, the kit will come online but live streaming, dashboard telemetry, or camera time-sync may fail. The wildcard *.chime.aws UDP range (3478 and 5000–65000) is required for the WebRTC media path used by live video; many corporate firewalls block these by default. Share this table with the customer's network admin alongside the install scheduling email.

3Identify the board

Front Face & Indicator Legend

Before mounting, identify the indicator zones on the front face. The board has four zones: channel LEDs, system LEDs, power input, and the network jack. Status colors mean the same thing across all eight channels.

LED color reference

Channel LED solid green = relay closed. LED off = relay open. PWR solid = 24V healthy. LINK solid = uplink to Zira platform established. SYNC blinking = receiving live triggers. FAULT amber indicates an over-temperature, short, or firmware error and requires inspection.

4Read the pinout

Terminal Pinout (Underside)

The screw-clamp terminal block sits along the bottom edge of the enclosure. Sixteen positions: two terminals per channel labelled COM and NO. Wire your load between COM and NO. Polarity does not matter for the relay contacts themselves.

Channel pin assignments

Pin numbering is sequential: pin 1 = CH1 COM, pin 2 = CH1 NO, pin 3 = CH2 COM, and so on through pin 16 = CH8 NO. Use ferrules on stranded wire above 18 AWG to prevent strand fraying. Always de-energize the load circuit before wiring.

5Mount and power

Mount the Board, Bring Up the PSU

The board mounts to standard 35mm DIN rail (EN 50022). Place it inside your existing control enclosure beside your PLC, or use a small NEMA-rated enclosure of your own. Provide 24V DC from either the supplied DIN PSU or your facility's existing 24V control bus.

    Snap the relay board onto the DIN rail
    Hook the top of the enclosure's rear clip over the rail and press the body downward until the spring-loaded lower clip seats. Add an end stop on each side. The board can be mounted in any orientation; allow 20mm clearance above for terminal access.

    Mount the 24V DIN PSU
    Snap the supplied PSU onto the same rail. Wire 100-240V AC mains into the PSU's L, N, and PE terminals using the facility's branch circuit conductor. PSU rating: 24V DC · 2.5A. Skip this step if powering from an existing 24V bus.

    Wire 24V to the relay board
    Run two conductors from PSU output (or 24V bus) to the relay board's 24V DC IN block. Use the marked + and terminals. Recommended 16-18 AWG. Ferrules required on stranded conductors.

    Energize and confirm
    Apply mains. The PWR LED should illuminate solid green within two seconds. If PWR is off, FAULT lights, or any channel LED is unexpectedly on, see the troubleshooting section in the quick start guide.

Mains wiring requires qualified personnel

Only a qualified electrician should connect 100-240V AC mains to the supplied PSU. Follow your facility's lockout/tagout procedure before opening any energized panel. Earth/PE termination is mandatory on the PSU input side.

6Wire the load

Three Common Wiring Scenarios

The dry contact closes between COM and NO when triggered by the camera. How you wire the load depends on what the load is. Three common scenarios are shown below: a PLC input, a 24V stack light, and a 120V AC alarm or solenoid.

Run hot through the relay contact, neutral straight to the load. Max 5A at 250V AC per channel. Add a snubber across inductive loads.

Inductive loads need protection

Solenoids, contactor coils, motors, and other inductive loads generate voltage spikes when the relay opens. Install a flyback diode (DC) or an RC snubber (AC) across the load to protect the relay contacts. Without protection, contact life is significantly reduced.

7Pair with the camera

Connect the Board to the Zira Platform

The relay board joins the same network as your Zira cameras. Once it has a link, Zira's installation engineer pairs it to your camera fleet in the platform and configures which detections fire which channels.

    Connect the uplink cable
    Plug the supplied CAT6 patch cable into the UPLINK port on the board, and the other end into your switch or PoE injector. The board accepts standard 100/1000 Mbps Ethernet. Optional: power the board over PoE+ instead of the DIN PSU.

    Wait for the LINK and SYNC LEDs
    LINK goes solid when Ethernet is up. SYNC begins blinking within 60 seconds, indicating the board has registered with the Zira cloud. If SYNC does not blink, check that outbound HTTPS to *.zira.us is permitted on the network.

    Note the device ID
    A 6-character device ID is laser-etched on the front face below the model label. Provide this ID to your Zira contact so they can pair the board to your camera fleet in the platform.

    Zira configures the trigger logic
    Your Zira engineer maps each channel to a detection rule: which camera, which event, which dwell time, and which output behavior (pulse, hold, latch). Customer side: provide the channel assignment list to your controls team for documentation.
8Verify the signal

Test Each Channel Before Going Live

Before connecting the relay's output to a production machine, test each channel in isolation. Zira provides a test mode in the platform that lets you manually fire any channel to confirm wiring without triggering a real detection event.

    Open Test Mode in the Zira console
    In the Zira platform, navigate to Devices → Relays → [Your Board] and click Test Mode. This pauses live triggers and unlocks manual channel control.

    Manually fire each channel
    Click each channel's Fire button one at a time. Verify three things: the front-face channel LED illuminates, the corresponding load activates, and the channel releases when the test button is released or the timer elapses.

    Check end-to-end latency
    Test Mode reports the round-trip latency in milliseconds. Healthy values are under 200ms from console click to relay close. Latency above 500ms typically indicates a network bottleneck and should be investigated before going live.

    Exit Test Mode and go live
    Click Exit Test Mode. The board resumes normal operation. Your first real detection trigger should appear in the activity log within seconds of the next configured event on the floor.

Recommended: dry run before connecting safety-adjacent loads

If any channel ultimately drives a safety-adjacent device (an alarm in a hand-in-zone use case, for example), test the full chain with the load disconnected first. Confirm the camera detection fires the relay reliably across at least 50 events before wiring to the actual safety circuit.
